Bike Valet Celebrated 15,000 Bikes Parked!!!
Since the inception of the SLO Bike Valet way back in
February 2006, we have parked over 15,000 bikes. Prizes were given
away, pictures taken, and a fantastic time was had by all. Help
support this program and our planet by becoming a valet, outreach
volunteer, or riding your bike to one of our valet events. To find out
more about Bike Valet click here, and thanks for riding.
Rideshare Announces Workplace Bike Sharing Program
Ever wished your company had a company bike? Or maybe
two - in case the other one was being used by the "boss"? Well
Rideshare announced this week that they have a program that might be
just what you need. Known as the Workplace Bike Sharing Program, two
free bikes (one mens-one womans), two helmets, and a new alternative to
dealing with company travel needs are all yours for the taking. Certain
conditions must be met first, like enrolling in one of the Coalitions'
one-hour bike safety workshops,
logging your trips throught Rideshare's TripLink program, and signing
waiver forms for employee bike check-out. This almost sounds too good
to be true. More details can be found at www.rideshare.org or by contacting kgreer@rideshare.org.
Guess Who's Coming to Town? Wanna Help? We Could Use Your Help!
On November 27th, the Third Annual Santa House and Bike Happening
will take place from 9am until 1pm. Volunteers are needed to help with
traffic calming, bike valet parking, and just riding along with Ole St.
Nick and all the other folks as we welcome him to San Luis Obispo. You
can view and print a flier for this event here, and even watch a YouTube video from last years event here.
Please, make this years ride enjoyable to all. We'll meet at the Wells
Fargo parking lot on Marsh Street at 9:45am. Decorate your bike, bring
a friend, and best of all, have fun.
Thank you to the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association for making this wonderful event a bike-friendly one.

$3 Million of Stimulus Funding Go to Biking and Walking in SLO County
In April 2009, the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments ruled on how funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be spent in our region. We are happy to report that nearly 17% of it was programmed for bicycling and walking projects. Included in the mix was $1.2 million for the Railroad Safety Trail between the Amtrak Station and Marsh Street in SLO. Other projects include the Pismo Beach boardwalk, new bike lanes on Main Street in Morro Bay and on Santa Rosa Ave in Atascadero. At the hearing, Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Adam Fukushima argued before the Council that bicycle and walking projects "are some of the most shovel ready projects in our region. They create jobs, a greener economy, and promote a better quality of life here on the Central Coast."

SLO City Council Proclaims Accomplishments of Coalition Executive Director
Adam Fukushima, former Executive Director of the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition, was honored Tuesday night during the July 21st meeting of the SLO City Council with a proclamation for his accomplishments. Amoung the many accomplishments Adam was able to achieve during his employment as the ED include helping the City of San Luis Obispo win a grant of $890,000 to construct a segment of the Railroad Safety Trail, working with local municipalities to meet transportation needs for cyclists, as well as promoting the Coalitions' own Bicycle Confidence Workshops and Bike Valet programs. To read more about past achievements of Adam and the Coalition read our 2008 Annual Report here.
Sharrows Debut on Monterey Street
We're excited to report that the City of San Luis Obispo has installed Sharrows on Monterey Street. In fact, we saw them put down paint right in front of our office. Sharrows, or shared lane markings, are designed for streets that aren't wide enough for a bike lane but need some kind of treatment so that bicyclists stay out of the door zone and motorists share the road. Watch our new video and get up to speed on everything sharrows. We're already noticing a more friendly Monterey Street. Click here to see our YouTube video of the Sharrow debut.

Railroad Safety Trail Ribbon Cutting Celebration, April 30th, 11:30am

Join us at the trail near the corner of Foothill and California Blvd.
Light refreshments for your enjoyment!
Of course, walking or biking to the celebration is the best way to get there (and most fun), however, if you must drive, Sierra Vista Hospital has kindly permitted parking for the event on the top deck of their new parking structure at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Casa Street. The bike path is located only two short blocks east on Foothill Boulevard.
Bike Coalition Receives Beautification Award

This month the Bicycle Coalition received a Beautification Award from the SLO Downtown Association for our efforts with the bike valet at the Farmer's Market. With over 11,000 bikes parked, we're helping downtown cut down on auto use and go green.
"We're very appreciative of the Downtown Association for their special recognition of the Bike Valet Program," said Dan Rivoire, Bike Valet Coordinator. "I'm honored to accept this award on behalf of the Bike Coalition."

Bicycle Coalition Helps Win $890,000 for Railroad Bicycle Trail
We're happy to hear the news that the state awarded $890,000 to fund construction of a new section of the Railroad Bicycle Trail. The Bicycle Coalition was pleased to help the City of SLO on this grant application from the Bicycle Transportation Account, which funds bicycle projects throughout the state of California. The grant will fund a section of the trail from the Amtrak train station to Marsh St. Competition was especially keen this year with applications from around the state totaling over $26.5 million of which only $7.2 million could be funded. Out of the 19 projects, the Railroad Bicycle Trail was among the top four with the highest level of funding. This is the third consecutive grant from the BTA awarded in as many years for the Railroad Bicycle Trail. As far as we've been able to tell, it is the first time that the BTA has been awarded to a project three years in a row. The success of the grant shows just how important it is to finish the Railroad Bicycle Trail, which will offer a wonderful way to ride from Cal Poly to downtown to the southern city limit without having to use busy streets or content with steep hills.
5% Day at New Frontiers, March 18th
Shop at New Frontiers Natural Foods next Wednesday (March 18) and 5% of your purchase will be donated to the Bicycle Coalition to continue our work in making SLO County a better place to bike and walk! New Frontiers is located at 896 E Foothill Blvd Ste C, San Luis Obispo.

Bike Valet Celebrates 10,000 Bikes
On Thursday, January 15th, the Bicycle Coalition's Bike Valet Program crossed a major landmark in bicycle parking. We marked the evening by surprising our 10,000th rider with a few exciting prizes. Cyclist Liz Chapple peddled home with a pair of SLO Nexus cycling socks, $10 in gift certificates to Bel Frites, a bottle of Shadow Canyon Rose, a Wheel Experience T-Shirt and an iPod Shuffle. We're extremely thankful to SLO Nexus, Bel Frites, Shadow Canyon and Rideshare for donating to our cause.
